Attica opened in October 2006 and managed to be talk of town long before they opened. The club/restaurants is located on the south Bund just south of the Yan An Road highway, on the 11th floor of an old colonial style building, with 2 rooftop terraces offering some of the best views on Pudong. There is a big dance area with a VIP balcony upstairs and a small R'n'b / Hip Hop room with a stunning 360degree window front facing Pudong. Prices at Attica are quite high with drinks at around 60-70 rmb.

BonBon is the new Pegasus, catering for a very young crowd of party goers in Shanghai, with open bar deals almost every day. Opened in 2005 as the Home of Godskitchen, BonBon is busy even on weekdays with e.g. their Addicted Tuesday parties hosting international guest names and some of Shanghai's best local DJs such as Trix (Tuesdays), Siesta (DnB). Pegasus has been on the scene for a long time, one of the long standing, respected clubs which used to have a dedicated following. Known for its dedication to hip hop and drum and bass music, Pegasus is rough around the edges but knows how to hold a damn fine party. The club is hidden away up a staircase on central Huai Hai road.

VIP Room started big in 2005, a huge 1200sqm club with a 9m high ceiling. The main room is 900sqm, with a large central bar, and adjacent champagne room and lounge. VIP balances well, managing to fit in a decent-sized dancefloor and lots of tables. The building and interiors were designed by a cutting edge team of international designers.

Love old and new Hip-Hop? Then Guandii is the place to be in Shanghai. Guandii specializes in pulsing beats and up-tempo Hip-Hop. The house DJ spins a good mix, so you're likely to enjoy yourself no matter what day of the week you visit, but Friday and Saturday nights are especially energetic (and crowded).

Hey, Where'd My Depression Go? Oh wait - it seems dkd killed it. The clubbing benchmark of the city (declared as an officially released statement by yours truly), is unsurprisingly mentioned on most of the dating profiles on this site as a "Favourite club". And in my eyes, they've accomplished (an continue to do) something near-impossible in this fickle city.

4 Live originally opened in 2005 as "La Fabrique", later renamed to "Fabrique", and we've seen some fabulous nights here in 2005 and 2006, including the increasingly popular microfabrique nights, as well as appearances from minimal techno DJ Frank Mueller. Just recently "Fabrique" was again renamed in "4 Live" and is now totally dedicated to Live music, with mostly local live bands on weekends.

O2 opened in July 2006 and is ever since popular with locals and foreigners that go for a more local clubbing experience (compared to venues on the Bund for example). A low-pitch rumble becomes a heavier thud as the lift ascends to the 4th Floor of No. 1 Huai Hai Zhong Lu. The elevator doors open to a chorus line of "Huan yin guang ling" girls flanked on either side by some well-suited heavy-hitters. Behind them a wall glows with coloured strips of LED much like the "Scratch 'n Sniff"/tasting wall at the entry to Willy Wonka's top-secret candyland in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" but with a darker twist - The real difference is that this factory is all about eye and ear candy, and it's no longer a secret: It's Club G-Spot.

You feel at home in Cotton's, with its big open fireplaces and cosy sofas. The building itself is a beautiful, old French villa, dating back to the 1930's.

If you like your Chinese food tongue-scaldingly hot, Guyi is a good bet. A vast menu and ubiquitous use of chilli make this one of the hottest regional restaurants in town. Most people opt for a personal hotpot and a gallon of lager. The food is well-prepared, good value and always tasty. Expect to queue without a reservation on the weekends.

Hot Pot King
Spicy and meaty Sichuan hotpots are the speciality here, and the King does them better than anywhere else in Shanghai. Azul/Viva
New-latino cuisine blended with Mediterranean and Asian flavours. It sounds surreal, but it really works. Located on two floors, both restaurants serve the same eclectic mix of tapas and main courses, to-die-for desserts and good wines. Though all dishes are carefully prepared and the Moorish-influenced interiors are super-chic, prices are well below comparable restaurants in more established locations, such as the Bund.

Resident expat haven for great salads, pasta, juices and comfort food as well as the most popular Sunday brunch in town. Smart-yet-friendly bar and grill which welcomes after-work diners, tourists and business visitors in equal measure. Gently lit interior and open terrace in summer provide a balanced eating environment. A recent addition to Shanghai's burgeoning Chinese meat-free scene, Vegeatery manages to combine good food with stylish surroundings. Getting around Shanghai

Taxis are plentiful in Shanghai. The Dazhong and Ba Shi companies tend to be most reliable, and three little red stars on the windshield indicate exemplary drivers (or at least those who won’t speak on their mobile phones, spit out the window or run red lights). Always ask hotel doormen to explain directions in Chinese. An average taxi ride within the city centre is Rmb10-20.

Shanghai is a vast metropolis, straddling both sides of the Huangpu River. Pudong, the newer and brasher business area, is literally “East of the Pu (river)”. “Dong” means east. Puxi, the stately and lived-in Shanghai heartland, is west of the river (“xi” means west). First-timers to Shanghai will need time to digest it all. This is a city in rapid transition. The skyline ranges from awesome to awful with “show off” architecture ensuring no two buildings are alike. The glorious stone buildings along The Bund are a journey back in time while, across the river, the Pearl Oriental Tower with its fat, spherical bulbs and spindly legs is particularly taxing to the eye. Just behind it, the gleaming 88-storey Jinmao Tower (which houses the Grand Hyatt) soars gracefully. At night the entire city (including highways) is lit up in gaudy green, blue and red like a karaoke parlour. Shanghai is brash, bold and, in older side lanes, beautiful – all at once. And it has trees. Lots of them. But on to those gleaming Shanghai business hotels, and some quirky options. Puxi first.
