Surely one of the cooler names for a nightlife haunt, especially if names like Club Snatch Club and On On Kangaroo Bar ring a bell. MUSE does still manage to amuse however, Carina Lau will be present for tonight’s Hollywood-style grand opening, with star Carina Lau, an actress who coincidentally happens to be spokeswoman for the Hong Kong fashion brand... It's simply breathtaking - encompassing everything across the river for as far as the eye can see. The bar itself is also impressive-looking, with flames racing across the bar and huge pictures of women with full red lips. There's red, and lots of it. Check out the bottle twirling, fire twi..

Mural

Address: 697 Yongjia Road
Phone: 6433 5023
Hours: Tue-Thu, Sun 6:30pm-2am; Fri-Sat 6:30pm-3am
A very unique style bar that offers a line up that is equally unique, from Latin Bands to original funk. Crazy on Friday nights when the funk hits the fan and the open bar keeps all in good spirits.

Barbarossa Lounge

Address: 231 Nanjing Xi Rd, Peoples Park, behind Starbucks / next to the Shanghai Art Museum. Walk into the gate next to the Kathleen's and follow the path.
Phone: 63180220
Hours: Daily 11am-Late
A beautiful location and atmosphere with Arabic influenced design, inside as well as out, with friendly staff and sheesha pipes. Drinks were good, but nothing outstanding though. The terrace should be a hit during summertime. We will certainly come back - in the meantime we hope to find out how Barbarossa was related to the middle east. P.S: Ladies Night on every Thursday.(Free cocktail for ladies)

Zapata's

Address: 5 Hengshan Road
Phone: 6474 6166 (11am-5pm), 6433 4104 (after 5pm)
Hours: Daily 5pm-late
Mexican restaurant on two floors next to Sasha's, packed for the ladies night on Wednesdays.

Mesa & Manifesto

Address: 748 Julu Lu
Phone: 6289 9108
Hours: Daily 10am-late (Weekend Brunch 11:30am-5pm)
Housed in a former electronics factory on Julu Road, Mesa brings industrial chic to Shanghai with a bright, modern warehouse type space with huge glassed kitchen. Mesa offers brunch on weekends, fresh breads & pastries, savoury breakfast options, gourmet salads and sandwiches, and mains as well as an extensive a la carte dinner menu.

Face

Address: Ruijin Guest House, 118 Ruijin Er Road
Phone: 6466 4328
Hours: Daily 12pm-2am
Beautifully decorated interior with plush chairs and old opium beds. You will meet a lot of (cocky) foreigners, but Chinese as well. In summertime sit outside in large comfy chairs and have a look at the European style building. Nice environment! The prices are a little tough and sometimes you wait a bit until the waitress comes up to you.

Malone's

Address: 255 Tongren Road
Phone: 6247 2400, 6289 4830
Popular bar and restaurant with live music 7 days a week, good burgers and salads, sport screenings and free pool. Lots of expat business men drinking beer.

Upstairs at Park 97

Address: 2A Gaolan Road, inside Park 97
Phone: 5383 2328
Hours: Sun-Thu 8pm-2am, Fri-Sat 8pm-late
Art deco lounge with a nice balcony overlooking Fuxing Park. Live music 7 days a week. Stylish mixed crowd. Door policy: No shorts or quarter lengths trousers for guys!

Senses Wine Lounge

Address: 515 Jianguo Xi Road
Phone: 5492 1655
Hours: Daily 11am-late
Senses is a Wine Bar with a restaurant, hence offering a good range of food but putting main attention on liquids. The wine list features good selection of wines, specialising in Australian and French origins. Senses philosophy is to offer an "non-intimidating" surrounding not only for connaisseurs, but also for those curious to know more about wine.

O'Malley's

Address: 42 Taojiang Road
Phone: 6474 4533
Hours: Daily 11am-2am
Nice Irish pub and the venue of choice for all live sport screenings. Enjoy the outside tables and garden with the whole family, with play equipment for kids. Free pool and darts.

JZ

Address: 46 Fuxing Road
Phone: 6431 0169
Hours: Daily 8pm-2am
JZ is not as exciting a name as some of the dance clubs, say Guandii or Bon Bon which creates interest. JZ is kind of bland, but it is simple and that is all JZ is, it has no complex concept it's just JZ, just Jazz. This definitely works here; the stage is almost as big as the area for the audience, this creates an intimate setting even though the tables are crammed together.

Cloud 9

Address: 87/F Jin Mao Bldg, 88 Shi Ji Da Dao
Phone: 5049 1234
Hours: Daily 11h30am-2am
Located on the 87th floor of the Jin Mao tower, the Hyatt's Hotel Bar offers a breathtaking view over Shanghai. The dark interior itself is less exciting than you would expect. Minimum purchase is 110RMB which buys you two Gin Tonics. To get there, take the elevators up the lobby level of the Grand Hyatt, turn right and change the elevators there to the 87th level.

Cotton's (Anting)

Address: 132 An Ting Lu
Phone: 6433 7995
You feel at home in Cotton's, with its big open fireplaces and cosy sofas. The rooms are elegantly decorated and colour co-ordinated - the 'green room' is done out in soothing hues of light green with triangular cushions to match, and the 'red room' boasts a lovely red chandelier and a big crackling fireplace. The building itself is a beautiful, old French villa, dating back to the 1930's.

I Love Shanghai

Address: 155 East Zhongshan Er Lu
Phone: 6355 8058
Hours: Daily 5pm-2am
There's a new gem on the Bund - of a different kind - south of the current sparks like Bund 18, Three on the Bund, M on the Bund and so on. I Love Shanghai should, just implore everyone by default (title and location) to check it out (if not why are you here?), even with their somewhat amateur-looking sign slotted out front.

Glamour Bar

Address: 6F, 5 Guangdong Lu
Phone: 6350 9988 (9am-5pm); 6329 3751
Hours: Daily 5pm-late
With stunning views as a backdrop and gorgeous lounging inside, the sexy new Glamour Bar on the Shanghai Bund provides a NeoGlam setting that makes for memorable evenings, every night. The sensuous space is a modern interpretation inspired by the luxury ocean liners of the 1930s. A stunning chrome-and-mirror bar, with the distinctive shape of a vintage ship, anchors the room.

Jade on 36

Address: 36F, Tower 2, Pudong Shangri-La, 33 Fu Cheng Lu
Phone: 6882 3636 , 6882 8888 x 280
Hours: Restaurant:
Daily 6:30pm-10pm;
Sun-Thu 6pm-1am, Fri-Sat 6pm-2am
Jade on 36 has brought us a real fine dining venue with a stunning view of the Bund. On half of the height of the Jin Mao dining venues you get a sight twice as attractive. Jade, the restaurant and the bar, has been acclaimed for its design. The waiters will happily explain the concept behind the design - I prefer it plainer interiors.

De la Coast

Address: 1 Yan'an Lu
Phone: 6330 2615
Hours: 6pm-2am
Welcome to Bundland (opened June 2006). The newest baby on the Bund block is de la Coat. Don't let the whole "on the coast" geographical misnomer sway you though, because this place is just gorgeous. The staff are attentive and plentiful, the food is good, if a little on the tiny side (but what else would you expect from Japanese owners) and the decor is just yummy.

Studio 78

Address: 2F, 78 TongRen Road
Phone: 6289 5117
Hours: Mon-Thu 6pm-2am
Fri-Sat 6pm-3am
Sunday closed

Sasha's

Address: 9 Dong Ping Road
Phone: 6474 6628
Hours: Bar: Sun-Thu 11am-1am, Fri-Sat 11am-2am
Restaurant: 11am-10.30pm (last order)

Live Bar

Address: 721 Kunming Lu, Yangpu District
Phone: 2833 6764
Hours: Daily 8pm-3am
A typical dark and dingy underground venue but has great potential and cheap drinks. Once Line 4 of the metro is fully opened expect this place to become very busy if they continue to bring the bands in.

Velvet Lounge

Address: Bldg 3-4, 1F, 913 Julu Lu
Phone: 5403 2976
Hours: Sun-Thu 5pm-3am, Fri-Sat 5pm-5am
New lounge downstairs of Casanova Restaurant, with grand opening party scheduled for early March 2006. Velvet Lounge is a sexy, ambient Lounge with comfortable sofas and chilled out music. They also serve authentic thin crust gourmet pizzas until close.

Air Bar

Address: 34F, 1066 Yan'an Xi Road, Summit Service Apartment (next to the Regent Hotel)
Phone: 5239 5409; 6213 0022
Hours: Mon-Fri 4pm-late; Sat-Sun 11:30am-late
Opening offically mid-April, Air Bar boasts a 700m/sq garden terrace on the 34th floor and a refreshing view of the Shanghai Skyline, with bar and BBQ.

Elite Bar

Address: Bldg 16, No. 34. The New Factories, Yu Yao Road, Jing'an
Phone: 5213 5567, 5213 5568
Hours: Daily 9pm-late
New bars continue to open in Shanghai this summer like the number of tops twisting off bottles of water. Luckily Elite Bar is amongst them, and though the opening falls just outside the summer bracket, there's no doubt it will still be hot (in more ways than one). Located in The New Factories - the new 20,000 sqm complex at the intersections of Yuyao Lu, Xikang Lu and Haifeng Lu.

Muse

Address: 68 Yuyao Lu, inside The New Factories
Phone: 62188166, 52135228
Hours: Sun-Wed: Club 8pm-2am
Thu-Sat: Club 8pm-4am
Sun-Wed: Dinner 5pm-midnight; Snacks 10pm-2am
Thu: Dinner 5pm-midnight;
Fri-Sat: Dinner 5pm-midnight; Snacks 10am-close
MUSE. Karaoke was carried by an even bigger wave of enthusiasm after combining with MTV ("KTV" comes from the integration of "Karaoke" and "MTV"). It has become a lively source of entertainment, with such technology-supported recreational singing sweeping across Asia. There is a famous quote from Time Magazine: "Mao Zedong and Mohandas Gandhi changed Asian days, Inoue transformed its nights".

Recommendation:

Name: Cash Box KTV(钱柜)
Tel: 6374-1111, 5306-3999 ext.9
Add: 109 Yandang Lu near Nanchang Lu (雁荡路109号近南昌路)

Open 8am-2pm

Swanky decor, elaborate lighting, fantastic service and tasty snacks make this a great choice for rowdy karaoke bashes. The state-of-art facilities can make even the most tone-deaf aspiring singer sound like anyone from Bing Crosby to Mariah Carey. Prices are reasonable and there are special hours every day. Now he has opened a sublimely designed high-class restaurant, which serves new French cuisine. The dining room is chic and sensual and the food is sensational; an undoubted revolution in Shanghai cuisine.

Three on the Bund
3 Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu (entrance on Guangdong Lu)
Tel: (21) 6321 7733.
Website: www.threeonthebund.com

M on the Bund
Opened in the late 1990s, M remains a Shanghai pioneer – and the first upscale restaurant located along the Bund. Australian-owned, and sister to Hong Kong's M at the Fringe, the cuisine melds Mediterranean and Australian styles. The stylish atmosphere, unbeatable terrace views of the Bund and the night-time Pudong skyline and a good wine menu make this Shanghai's number one venue to impress visitors. Pre-dinner drinks at the adjoining Glamour Bar are, frankly, de rigeur.

7/F, No 5 The Bund (corner of Guandong Lu)
Tel: (21) 6350 9988.
Website: www.m-onthebund.com

Jade on 36
This 36th-floor restaurant features a lavish, big-budget design, jaw-dropping views over the river and city and perhaps the most innovative cuisine in the city. French chef Paul Pairet has created a series of high-art “cuisine de voyage” tasting menus which pair flavours and aromas in exciting and unorthodox combinations. The result is truly other-worldly.

36th Floor, Pudong Shangri-La hotel, 33 Fucheng Lu, Pudong
Tel: (21) 6882 3636.
Website: www.shangri-la.com

Business
A Future Perfect
Partially hidden down a narrow alley not far from the Hilton hotel, this small, contemporary restaurant opened in late 2005 and is now one of the hottest tables in town. With a bright and stylish interior, the menu wanders along many paths, frequently straying into the realm of German, French, Asian, North American and Latin American cuisines for its flavours and inspirations.

Building 16, 351 Huashan Lu (near Changshu Lu)
Tel: (21) 6248 8020.
Website: www.afutureperfect.com.cn

Simply Thai
Intimate and unpretentious the setting maybe, but it undoubtedly serves the best Thai food in Shanghai. Nestled on the up-and-coming Dongping Lu, which has something of an NYC 'village' feel, Simply Thai is well located near several bars for pre- or post-dinner drinks. It would be a mistake not to linger awhile and enjoy the rich flavours and generous portions.

5C Dongping Lu (by Hengshan Lu)
Tel: (21) 6445 9551.
Website: www.simplythai-sh.com

T8
Blending both Asian and mediterranean flavours and interior design styles, T8 scores highly on both style and substance. One of Xintiandi's most-noted dining experiences, it is popular with a business clientele that enjoys eclectic food and fine wines. The food, service and ambience neatly capture the essence of both 1930s and early-21st century Shanghai.

North Block, Xintiandi
Tel: (21) 6355 8999.
Website: www.t8shanghai.com

Budget
Guyi Hunan
If you like your Chinese food tongue-scaldingly hot, Guyi is a good bet. A vast menu and ubiquitous use of chilli make this one of the hottest regional restaurants in town. Most people opt for a personal hotpot and a gallon of lager. The food is well-prepared, good value and always tasty. Expect to queue without a reservation on the weekends.

89 Fumin Lu (by Julu Lu)
Tel: (21) 6249 5628.

Hot Pot King
Spicy and meaty Sichuan hotpots are the speciality here, and the King does them better than anywhere else in Shanghai. There are three venues across town, all of which are extremely popular and serve until the early hours. The setting is pretty cool and service excellent. Not one for non-meat eaters though.

1416 Huaihai Lu (by Fuxing Lu)
Tel: (21) 6473 6380.

Nan Xiang
Probably the best place to savour Shanghai's favourite food, xiao long bao (soup dumplings). These filling snacks consist of a flour dumpling shell filled with meat and soup. First-timers need to watch out for a) burning their mouth and b) spurting soup down themselves. Also serves Shanghainese dishes and noodles.

Yu Gardens, 85 Yu Lu
Tel: (21) 6355 4206.

Trendy
Azul/Viva
New-latino cuisine blended with Mediterranean and Asian flavours. It sounds surreal, but it really works. Located on two floors, both restaurants serve the same eclectic mix of tapas and main courses, to-die-for desserts and good wines. Though all dishes are carefully prepared and the Moorish-influenced interiors are super-chic, prices are well below comparable restaurants in more established locations, such as the Bund.

18 Dongping Lu (by Hengshan Lu)
Tel: (21) 6433 1172.

Element Fresh
Resident expat haven for great salads, pasta, juices and comfort food as well as the most popular Sunday brunch in town. Clean, spacious and with a nice terrace for summer eating, Element Fresh serves good-sized portions and the waiting staff are extremely attentive. Now expanding across the city, this small chain has venues in both Puxi and Pudong.

Shanghai Centre 1376 Nanjing Xi Lu (by Xikang Lu)
Tel: (21) 6279 8682.
Website: www.elementfresh.com

Shintori
The unmarked grey façade is confusing (look for the house number plaque), but once inside you cannot fail to be wowed by the fabulous warehouse-chic décor and beautiful use of space. This place would not seem out of place in NYC's Meat Packing district. Serves imaginative Japanese cuisine to a hip and stylish clientele.

803 Julu Lu (by Fumin Lu)
Tel: (21) 5404 5252.

Personal Recommendations
Da Marco
A long-standing favourite for Shanghai's pizza and pasta buffs. Bucks the Shanghai trend for elaborately styled dining space in favour of a home-style Italian trattoria, and instead concentrates on its flavours. Excellent breads, wines and pastas are the house specialities and the bill won't sting your wallet too heavily.

62 Yandang Lu (by Nanchang Lu)
Tel: (21) 6385 5998.

KABB
Smart-yet-friendly bar and grill which welcomes after-work diners, tourists and business visitors in equal measure. Gently lit interior and open terrace in summer provide a balanced eating environment. The eclectic menu, ranging from burgers to pasta and Tex-Mex to stir-fry, is neither particularly cheap nor earth-shattering, but the unthreatening ambience is perfect for unwinding, people watching or staring into the eyes of the one you love.

5 North Block, Xintiandi
Tel: (21) 3307 0798.
Website: www.bluefrog.com.cn

Vegeatery
A recent addition to Shanghai's burgeoning Chinese meat-free scene, Vegeatery manages to combine good food with stylish surroundings. The excellent value lunch buffet is complemented by a large evening menu, helpful staff and a bright, airy dining space. Though located on the second floor of a shopping mall, it rises well above the usual 'food court' cliché.

3/F Central Plaza 381 Huaihai Zhong Lu (by Madang Lu)
Tel: (21) 6391 5589.

Getting around Shanghai

Taxis are plentiful in Shanghai. The Dazhong and Ba Shi companies tend to be most reliable, and three little red stars on the windshield indicate exemplary drivers (or at least those who won’t speak on their mobile phones, spit out the window or run red lights). Always ask hotel doormen to explain directions in Chinese. An average taxi ride within the city centre is Rmb10-20.

Shanghai is a vast metropolis, straddling both sides of the Huangpu River. Pudong, the newer and brasher business area, is literally “East of the Pu (river)”. “Dong” means east. Puxi, the stately and lived-in Shanghai heartland, is west of the river (“xi” means west). First-timers to Shanghai will need time to digest it all. This is a city in rapid transition. The skyline ranges from awesome to awful with “show off” architecture ensuring no two buildings are alike. The glorious stone buildings along The Bund are a journey back in time while, across the river, the Pearl Oriental Tower with its fat, spherical bulbs and spindly legs is particularly taxing to the eye. Just behind it, the gleaming 88-storey Jinmao Tower (which houses the Grand Hyatt) soars gracefully. At night the entire city (including highways) is lit up in gaudy green, blue and red like a karaoke parlour. Shanghai is brash, bold and, in older side lanes, beautiful – all at once. And it has trees. Lots of them. But on to those gleaming Shanghai business hotels, and some quirky options. Puxi first.
